The vicious circle of exploitation has never stopped and will never ever
stop. As bad is continuously attached with good same way generosity is with
exploitation. It’s not so that big or reputed casts only do exploitation,
whosoever gets chance does so. Manjhanpur village in Kaushambi is perfect
example of this.
Yadavs are quite prominent over here. There are one-two houses of
Brahmins, who just care about saving their priest-ship. It is said that
Brahmins have never been stuck to anyone. When it comes on their prestige, they
start fighting among themselves then what to say about others. And this is also
a fact that when in minority no one is as helpless as Brahmin. So in absence of
Thakurs (rajputs), Yadavs are prominent over here, and are the controllers of
society.
Normally the social structure has not changed till yet. Today also the
same custom is followed. Whenever there is any feast the serial for enjoying it
is Brahmins, Rajputs, Yadavs, Patels and then others as per hierarchy of their
casts. This custom being followed in manjhanpur is not any surprise, but
sometimes it pains that Indian society tries to find the lower people in the
society in order to satisfy and mount their ego instead of eradicating this.
Yadavs are well off with land possessions and money, and no one else can
match them. In such case being proud of that is but natural. Teasing, bullying,
buying land forcefully, keeping labours on beggar is their normal routine and
way of living life and having fun.
But till when everything can be seen silently. Time always lets us see
something new. The villagers saw this noviceness in life when a Kayasth old
woman transferred her land in the name of Harkhu Singh Chamar before dying. He
had served her a lot in her last days. It was a different thing that this old
woman also didn’t use to touch him, but before dying she gave her blessings in
this form to the villagers.
Harkhu Singh was a brave man. He knew that studies will show right path
to his children. So he didn’t leave any stone unturned for studies of his
children. His real name was just Harkhu, but he thought that he ought to put Singh
behind his name to face Yadavs who used to put Singh behind their name. And
hence he named his sons as Chakkar Singh & Takkar Singh. Chakkar singh had
passed his metric somehow and became a clerk. He always used to find out ways
to keep his pocket warm and puffy. Takkar Sigh Passed his inter college and
became a teacher in Primary school. He put his father’s head high by earning
name, fame and good money and giving good competition to yadavs in all this.
Harkhu Singh’s pointed moustaches themselves used to tell story of satisfaction
and content from his life.
Takkar Singh had lived a successful life by challenging the reputed
yadavs but the stony path of life had taught him that ultimate goal cannot be
achieved by just clearing inter-college and he used to focus on studies of his
children; as a result Madhusudan Das was doing MA from Allahabad University
which is also recognised as OXFORD of east. Allahabad University is not less
than any foreign University for the nearby states and areas. His grandfather
was very happy with him, as if he would have got heaven.
His grandfather didn’t understand Sanskrit but used to tell his own
philosophy “bachua bada log kahat hain sathe saathiyam sam aacharat –means till
you become 60 and its turn to go to God Yam till then do the same thing which
high profile and prestigious people do. When you follow such people chances of
failure are rare. Now Madhusudan is aware that explanation done by his grandfather
is not right, but not to hurt him he keeps quite and nods. But with these
thoughts he has become successful in building good reputation in the society of
illiterates and why not he has proved his intelligence by making his childrencapable
of standing on their own.
Madhusudan was named as per Harkhu’s wish as Madhusudan Singh. But
Madhusudan is quite emotional for his cast identity, and now a day in
reservation system one has to mention cast in the forms so it doesn’t matter
whatever you write as your title. So for his distinct identity he changed his
name to Madhusudan Das at the time of metric.
It is very difficult to characterise Madhusudan. He has got struggling
capability, openness and anger for higher casts as heredity. But he has got
sharpness from his true experiences. He saw that people reaching to higher
education are very rare from lower communities, and fact is not of only his
village but universal, where as well of people are very focused for studies.
Till graduation he got introduced to Dalit Literature, which made him
think that it was not only his or his state’s truth but of whole India which
they have kept like treasure in their heart. This has been earned in centuries.
These bruises, the pain coming out of these fill our blood with passion, vigor
and unity and make us stand on similar emotional platform.
Coming out of village and studying at different places made him
understand the society. He could notice the changes in himself. In spite of
being religious he doesn’t bow to any Pundit.
He knows that these people who have been boast of being bridge between
common folk and God for centuries have not been able to find any connection
between themselves and God yet. Thus he had got maturity and logic in his
thinking, which had made him unique in his own community too.
Finding such an intellectually fertile with them Ganpat and Sankat were
quite happy which was natural. Sankat himself believed that there is nothing
wrong in the demand of justice and disdaining the traditional thinkers by those
people who have faced injustice for centuries. Ganpat was unaware of these things.
He used to think that his society is not having such complexity with such
depth, but it didn’t take long for him to make this a part of his experiences.
